On March 30th, 2013, the On Action International Cultural Center in Wuhan, upon invitation, attended the 2013 first meeting of the College Volunteer Union hosted by the Association of Social Work of Wuhan University of Technology. Other participants include staff from Social Workers Across Boarders and Beijing On Action International Cultural Center as well as thirty plus students (some of whom major in Social Work) from Wuhan University, Central China Normal University, Huazhong Agricultural University, Hubei University of Economics, Jianghan University and Wuhan Social Work Professional College.

When the meeting started at 10 am, Wang Xiaofu, a member of Social Workers Across Boarders, led the warm-up interactive games through which participants got to know each other.

Then students from Hubei University of Economics showed us a part of the “Life Experience and Education Activities” they designed—“The Model Wedding”. By simulating wedding ceremonies of the East and the West, they presented to us the differences between oriental and occidental wedding customs, wishing more people could attach importance to marriage, which is sacred.

Getting to Know Each Other Through Games

Later on, Professor Guan and Mr. Liu from Wuhan University of Technology made comments on the students’ work from a professional prospective, acknowledging their efforts and offering advice for improvements. The teachers’ words provided many new ideas and methods that could be used in further developing the life education.

In the afternoon, while watching Nanny 119, Wang guided participants to analyze the characters’ behaviors and problems in the video from the standpoint of a social worker.

Next, Zhang Chunlei from the On Action International Cultural Center initiated a little game called “The Beauty and the Beast”, from which every one learned about the significance of communication and cooperation.

After that, participants talked about the programs and activities they were upon at the time. Although every one was busy with their own work, there were still many things to borrow and learn from each other. Through talking and sharing, there arose sparks of thought and every one seemed to be more energized.

At this meeting, the staff also introduced our organization, the On Action International Cultural Center, to the students, hoping the willing ones will join us and together do something meaningful and useful for the mobile population.

Students from Central China Normal University were very interested in our service program caring for migrant children and went to the On Action office for more information.
