When spring first visits many cities, early summer has arrived at Wuhan before we know it. And those who lost the chance of appreciating the beauty of spring could not help sighing and regretting.

To provide volunteers a chance to relax themselves and get close to nature, on April 14th, 2013, the Wuhan On Action International Cultural Center, together with 14 volunteers, set out a Green Travel (on foot)-to popularize the concept of “civility accompanies me” by picking up litter in parks.

At around 8:10 am, volunteers met at the front entrance of the River Beach Park (Hankow Marshland), and with staff Chen Xuelian’s help, got to know each other through self-introduction and interactive game. After that, staff Zhang Chunlei led the volunteers to simulate a collective bargaining surrounding a hypermarket’s staff asking for payment increase, welfare and benefits and adjustments of holiday system.

The volunteers formed the Labor Team and the Management Team on their own accord and after twenty minutes’ discussion, sent three representatives to negotiate respectively. Facing the Labor’s requirements such as raising payments, providing attendance bonus and weekly one-day-off, the Management steered clear of those points and responded with attention focused on reducing operation costs, expanding production and offering welfare through different means.

Model Collective Bargaining

Although it was a mini simulation, and no final consensus was reached between the two parties, the volunteers did learn about how to solve problems concerning interests via collective bargaining, and they also realized their lack of knowledge of law, thus aspired to learn more.

Before the hiking got started, our staff handed to volunteers some disposable gloves and garbage bags to pick up litter.

Picking Up Litter on the Marshland

At around half past nine, the volunteers and the staff, 18 people in total, set out from the main entrance of the River Beach Park. Along the way, volunteers found that most of what they picked up was cigarette ends. And seeing the On Action volunteers were picking the litter up, quite a few tourists at the marshland followed suit, picked up the litter they saw and threw it into trash bins.

We passed the Second Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, the Simeitang Park, and arrived at the destination, Xudong, where the office of On Action locates. After a short rest, we began talking about our reflections upon and feelings about this activity. Many volunteers said that, working indoors every day, this was the first time they walked for such a long distance, the first time they went through the marshland and over the Second Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge on foot, the first time they took a ferryboat and the first time they served as environmental protection volunteers…

Lining up on the Bridge

With modernization, people nowadays automatically choose convenient vehicles include buses, taxis, private cars and the like when going out and no longer have time to appreciate the beautiful sceneries around, leaving the days of pleasantly walking and happily chatting far behind. And with more cars, thus more pollution, now it seems to be Walter Mitty to have a green life.

Luckily, it’s not late if we take actions now.

And green life starts from green travel!
